September 2009: Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), female Juncos belong to the sparrow family but lack the typical streaks, wingbars, and speckles of other species, having solid body colors and white bellies. They trill and jingle and the white edging feathers on their tails are familiar sights as they forage close to the ground or at feeding stations. Legs and beaks are slightly pink, and females like this one are somewhat browner than the more charcoal colored males. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
