October 2009: Common Eiders (Somateria mollissima), male left, female right Common Eider drakes look like no other sea duck with their curious greenish-gold tinged heads. The better camouflaged dull brown females also sport the distinctive straight sloped bill of eiders and large size. They breed in colonies on offshore islands and females often share rearing of ducklings with other females in crèches. This pair was fetched on Popham Beach in midcoast Maine. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
