November 2009: Barred Owl (Strix varia) You don't often get big owls to pose for you in broad daylight but this one had little choice as its left wing is injured, likely from a speeding car while hunting rodents alongside Rt 95 in Kittery Maine. They're not uncommon, just more often heard than seen. You might recognize, or even hoot back to, their night calls which are often paraphrased, "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you aaaall." © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
