June 2009: Least Tern (Sternula antillarum antillarum), brooding one egg These little migratory terns nest in colonies right on sandy beaches like Goose Rocks in Maine where they have a rough time coping with beach traffic, predators, and high tides. Many states, like Maine, list them as endangered or threatened. The nest, as you can see, is little more than a small depression in the sand. Even so, they aggressively protect their colonies. Sexes are alike. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
