July 2009: Sanderlings (Calidris alba), nonbreeding plumage I never get tired of photographing these common but small pale sandpipers, they are always so cheerful and energetic while doodling about at the edge of the sea, probing the wet sands, chasing the waves back and forth, zipping by in a little flock, or in a group all sleeping on one leg. These two were fetched on Cape Cod near Wellfleet. Sanderlings are common along the Atlantic seaboard during spring and fall migrations and in winter when their plumage is much paler, much less so in summer. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta.
