January 2009: Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens), male They called these common little woodpeckers pubescens because, except for their size and relative lack of pointy feathers (hair) around the beak, they appear to be smaller versions of the larger Hairy Woodpecker who they aren't even all that related to. Only the adult males sport the red spot at the back of the head, juvenile males sport red foreheads. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
