February 2009: Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), female I call her "Hot Lips" and think her prettier and more colorful than her red hot partner who always gets the limelight. Here she is melting snowflakes for a drink during a 3 day blow on the Massachusetts North Shore. Northern Cardinals are one of the few songbirds where the female is known to sing back to the male. Youngsters have similar coloring to females but lack the brilliant coral beak. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
