December 2009: Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata bromia) Like many corvids, Blue Jays have a diverse vocabulary and can be excellent mimics. Once I heard one cry like a hawk to warn others a hawk was near. Many people are prejudiced against them for their more aggressive or predatory behaviors but I never tire of their brilliant colors and intelligence. Sexes are similar. This jay is waiting out a snowstorm in the lilacs behind my house in Kittery Point. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
