August 2009: Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis coromandus) nonbreeding adult Cattle Egrets are more often found in pastures and grassy areas where they forage for insects stirred up by livestock rather than wading in shallow waters like other herons. They also follow fires for the same reason. They have shorter, often hunched, and thicker necks than other white herons like the Snowy Egret. Breeding adults sport orange blushes on their heads and necks while juveniles have black bills. © Copyright 2008 Phillip Augusta. All rights reserved. |
